Immigration and Residency Compliance for Expats in India

Foreign nationals entering India for business or employment must comply with the visa and immigration guidelines managed by the Bureau of Immigration under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

1. Key Visa Categories

Foreigners must secure the correct visa type before arriving in India:

  • Business Visa (B-Visa): For attending corporate meetings, exploring business opportunities, or setting up a company. Employment with an Indian entity is not permitted.
  • Employment Visa (E-Visa): For foreign nationals taking up salaried positions with Indian companies. Subject to a minimum salary threshold of USD 25,000 per annum, with exemptions for specified technicians.

2. Mandatory FRRO Registration

Foreign nationals staying in India for more than 180 days must register with the Foreigners Regional Registration Officer (FRRO) within 14 days of arrival. Failure to register or extend residential permits on time can lead to monetary penalties or deportation.

Dinesh Prasad Tiwari & Associates assists corporate clients and expatriates with visa filings, FRRO registrations, and compliance management.
